The groundbreaking musical that set the stage for all that followed! Rodgers and Hammerstein's exuberant classic is a lively, tuneful musical full of cowboys, farmers, romance and fearless optimism.
Oklahoma! is Rodgers and Hammerstein’s first collaboration, and features song favourites such as, “The Surrey With The Fringe On Top,” “People With Say We’re In Love,” and, of course, the title song, “Oklahoma!” In many ways a comedy, there are layers of darkness in Oklahoma!, as Laurey is placed in the middle of a farm hand named Jud and a cowboy named Curly, just after the turn of the twentieth century in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). The setting is peopled with immigrants and settlers, and the story hints at the statehood which is to come, during a politically controversial time of Indigenous relocation.
